- Abstract
- Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by dopaminergic neuron loss and motor dysfunction. While pharmacological treatments such as L-DOPA provide symptomatic relief, exercise is emerging as an important intervention for enhancing neuroplasticity and functional recovery. In this study, EEG signals of a progressive PD model were recorded before and after treadmill exercise, and spectral analysis of EEG was computed to evaluate the effect of the treadmill training. Results showed that treadmill exercise significantly increased theta and beta band power in healthy controls, while only alpha power increased in the PD group. The PD group also exhibited higher delta relative power and lower gamma relative power than controls before exercise, indicating cortical “slowing,” but the gamma band difference disappeared after exercise. These findings suggest that exercise induces distinct cortical oscillatory changes in PD, with potential benefits for restoring high-frequency activity of the brain and potentially promoting neural plasticity.
