The Word Frequency Effects Modulated by Age in Korean Sentence Reading: Evidence from an Eye Tracking Study
Abstract
This study recorded young and older adults’ eye movements while reading to investigate how word frequency effects are affected by age in Korean reading. In Experiment 1, we manipulated the word frequency of target words to compare the two age groups’ eye movements on the target. The results showed that older adults were longer than young adults in duration measures on the target and older adults had smaller skipping rates than young adults did. In addition, we observed the word frequency effects in some measures. Importantly, there was an interaction effect between the word frequency and the age variable such that word frequency effects were larger in the older adults compared with the young adults. In Experiment 2, we also found the word frequency effects in young adults. Finally, based on the results obtained here, we discussed the characteristics of older adults’ eye movements during natural reading.
