Abstract
This paper examines the technological and economic trade relations between the Soviet Union and Western capitalist countries through the case of the Ministry of Food Industry of the Soviet Union from 1965 to 1975. Their trade relations underwent changes in the mid-1960s, and the institutions and national companies under the Ministry of Food Industry of the Soviet Union played a major role. This ministry sent its own delegates and accompanied Western experts to introduce Western technologies and equipment. The Soviet authorities often used credit-barter trade in this process. This demonstrates that the trade relations between the Soviet Union and the West are similar to core-periphery trade relations. However, the case of the Ministry of Food Industry reveals an aspect that contrasts with a stereotype naturally accepted in the trade relations between both parties. It has been generally recognized that the Soviet Union has always adopted many advanced Western technologies and equipment. Furthermore, Western food companies showed interest in Soviet equipment, particularly within the food industry sector.
