Abstract
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED|This dissertation proposes a multiscale topology optimization framework for the efficient design of pin-fin heat sinks utilized in various heat source cooling applications. To maximize the geometric freedom of microstructures, three distinct multiscale topol- ogy optimization approaches are established to derive functionally graded structures with spatially varying configurations, thereby simultaneously ensuring design freedom and computational efficiency. First, a multiscale topology optimization method incorporating an explicit de- homogenization capable of representing diverse microstructural geometries is proposed to maximize the design freedom of unit cells. By replacing the conventional, restrictive rectangular unit cells with a fixed rectangular configuration that includes fillets, the microstructural dimensions and orientations, as well as their cross-sectional shapes and layouts, are successfully integrated into the design variables. Three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations of the resulting pin-fin heat sink demonstrate that this approach achieves approximately a 30% enhancement in overall efficiency by effectively reduc- ing fluid resistance while maintaining thermal performance comparable to conventional uniform structures. Second, to optimize the pitch – the spacing between the pins – unit cell size opti- mization is integrated into the multiscale topology optimization framework. By approx- imating the pitch as the unit cell size, a framework is developed to design structures whose sizes grade continuously depending on their location within the design domain. To explictly represent these variations, three representation schemes are proposed and validated: 1) Delaunay triangulation, 2) Voronoi tessellation, and 3) projection func- tion. Third, a multiscale topology optimization approach implementing a two-layer model is proposed to efficiently account for 3D effects. The two-layer model is an effective technique that models 3D conjugate heat transfer and convective effects within a two- dimensional (2D) analysis plane. A geometric comparison with conventional 2D multi- scale topology optimization results confirms that the proposed approach yields shapes more favorable for thermal performance enhancement. Finally, 3D numerical analysis validates that the final design substantailly improves cooling efficiency by up to 48% compared to uniform structures. Although the methods proposed in this dissertation have a limitation in that their performance enhancements were validated under relatively low flow velocity conditions compared to actual pin-fin heat sink operating environments, they offer significant potential. If phenomenon in high-velocity flow are incorporated into the optimization in fugure work, this framework is expected to serve as an effective methodology for designing high-performance pin-fin heat sinks that require the systematic optimization of complex, multi-variable design spaces. ©2026 Yonghwa Ji ALL RIGHTS RESERVED – iii –
