- Abstract
- Modern infrastructure systems are becoming increasingly complex, interconnected, and dynamic, driven by the widespread adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs), the growing demand for electrification, and the integration of cyber-physical technologies. These developments introduce significant challenges in real-time coordination, scalability, and privacy, making traditional centralized control approaches less effective. In this context, distributed optimization has emerged as a promising solution to enable decentralized decision-making while maintaining global system performance. This thesis focuses on the development of distributed optimization algorithms for the operation of large-scale, networked systems with interdependent components. The contributions are demonstrated through two representative applications: voltage regulation in electric power distribution networks, and the coordination of coupled infrastructure systems such as water and energy networks. In the first part, we address voltage control under power losses using a distributed dual ascent method in DC networks. This is extended to AC distribution systems through a data-driven predictive control framework that combines Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) with the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to handle model uncertainties and privacy concerns. In the second part, we extend the distributed optimization framework to handle the coordination of interconnected infrastruc- ture systems involving multiple physical domains. Specifically, we focus on the water-energy network, where electrically driven water pumps interact with power generation and distribution systems. A distributed ADMM-based algorithm is proposed to solve the resulting multi-agent optimization problem while satisfying local subsystem constraints and ensuring information remains decentralized. Overall, this thesis proposes practically scalable methods for distributed optimization in smart infrastructure systems. The proposed algorithms are applicable to a broad range of networked systems where coordination, decentralization, and robustness to uncertainty are key operational requirements.|현대 인프라 시스템은 분산 에너지 자원(DER)의 광범위한 도입, 전력화에 대한 수요 증가, 사 이버-물리 기술의 통합에 힘입어 점점 더 복잡하고 상호 연결되며 동적으로 변화하고 있습니다.
