Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometric Analysis of Toxicants in Household Chemical Products

Abstract
Non-target screening analysis using high performance liquid chromatography-ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (MS) was performed in an attempt to identify toxic chemicals in four household chemical products, including bleach, fabric softener, synthetic detergent, and washing machine cleaner. Across the four household chemical products, 3043 features were detected using Compound Discoverer and 30 chemicals were tentatively identified by NIST 20 database and mzCloud MS/MS spectral library. Among the tentatively identified 30 chemicals, 11 were found in public chemical information database with their toxicity information: dermal toxicity for (‒)-caryophyllene oxide, triethanolamine, 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, triethyl citrate, 2-hydroxy-4-(octyloxyl)benzophenone, ethylvanillin, and methyl dihydrojasmonate and oral toxicity for 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 6-aminocaproic acid, and (E)-alpha-ionone.
