- Abstract
- As temperature rises by 1 °C, the numbers of food poisoning cases and the resulting patients increase by 5.27% and 6.18%, respectively. Due to the continuous increase in temperature, especially in developing countries, the level of monitoring of drinking water is vulnerable to pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, detection of pathogens in water supply is important to supply safe drinking water and prevent waterborne diseases. Dielectrophoretic microfluidic devices have been reported for continuous microbial isolation and rapid detection. The proposed device separated bacteria in water through positive dielectrophoresis of herringbone-shaped interdigitated array electrodes. Then it detected the changes in electrical signals caused by bacteria captured between the electrodes with narrower gaps. The performance of the device was evaluated with the pathogens (E. coli, S. aureus, and S. typhymurium) in tap water. Within 10 minutes, detection limit showed the performance corresponding to the level of 100 CFU/mL.
