- Alternative Title
- A colorimetric gold nanoparticle aggregation assay for detecting procalcitonin antigen
- Abstract
- Procalcitonin (PCT) is a useful inflammatory biomarker for the early diagnosis of bacterial infections. After the bacterial invasion, the levels of PCT in the blood increase within 6-12h. Especially in case of severe bacterial infections and sepsis, the concentration of PCT can reach rapidly up to 1000-fold. Thus, the PCT level in serum is a promising biomarker for monitoring bacterial infection. This study suggests a colorimetric immunoassay based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalized with an antibody. This method was used to detect PCT. In the presence of PCT, functionalized AuNPs undergo aggregation by antigen-antibody reaction, which causes the color change of gold colloidal solution. This color change can be monitored visually or by using a plate reader. Finally, this assay was verified by detecting PCT concentration (ng/mL).
