- Abstract
- Sepsis is an infection of the blood by bacteria that causes systemic inflammatory response syndrome. In patients with sepsis, mortality increases by 9% per hour, so early diagnosis and treatment are important. For diagnosis, bacteria must be selectively separated from the blood and cultured. The conventional method is blood culture. It takes about 10ml of blood and 3 to 5 days. In order to shorten this time, a chip capable of quickly processing a large amount of blood is required. Therefore, in this study, A Joule heating based bacteria separation chip was developed using the different temperature distribution according to the channel height and the difference in thermal resistance between hemocyte and bacteria. The maximum bacteria separation efficiency is 57.8% and the maximum hemocyte lysis rate is 99.8% in various flow rate conditions. This advance is expected to reduce the time needed to diagnose sepsis significantly.
