Synthesis of polynorbornene containing hierarchical structure liquid crystal moiety by ring opening metathesis polymerization

Abstract
Side chain liquid crystal polymer (SCLCP) has various optical, thermal, structural properties. Orientation of liquid crystal can be changed by external electric field. So SCLCP have distinctive phase behavior because of pendant liquid crystal. So researches had been proceeded to apply SCLCP on optical device such as reversible optical storage,
photonic crystal, sensor etc. However, SCLCP is difficult to make high molecular weight and well-defined polymerization. In this study, we synthesized the norbornene moiety with liquid crystal pendant and polymerized by using ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and then focus on high molecular weight well-defined polymer.
