Abstract
The digestive tract, responsible for regulating digestion and absorption, is a crucial organ. Its functions are primarily controlled by the enteric nervous system. Dysregulation of the digestive tract has been implicated in various conditions, and recent studies have highlighted the gut's involvement in central nervous system disorders. However, limited tools exist to study the gut's role in these conditions, particularly those targeting enteric neurons. In this study, I evaluated the expression patterns of novel split-Gal4 lines that target enteric neurons in Drosophila melanogaster, in the gut and ventral nerve cord. Among the lines examined, 5 demonstrated the potential targeting for selective neuron populations arborizing the rectum. Moreover, my findings indicate that 4 of these lines play a role in determining the shape of excreta. These lines will offer valuable opportunities to further investigate the functions of the rectum as well as the interactions between enteric neurons and the central nervous system.
