Abstract
This research explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems in Korean ceramics education, focusing on its impact on the design thinking process. The study delves into how AI can enhance the educational experience in ceramics, a field that balances intricate artistry with technical skills, and faces the challenge of remaining relevant in a rapidly digitalizing world.
The primary objective of this research is to address the growing gap between traditional ceramics education and modern technological advancements. By integrating AI into ceramics teaching methodologies, the study aims to revitalize interest in this age-old art form, making it more accessible and appealing to a new generation of students. The research investigates the potential of AI to augment traditional teaching methods, offering a more personalized and interactive learning experience while maintaining the cultural integrity of Korean ceramics.
To evaluate the effectiveness of AI integration, a comprehensive study was conducted with novice ceramics students. The study employed a novel AI-based system, Ceramic GAN model | Smart Culture Lens | AI Ceramic Imagination Tool | LLaVA-Ceramic, designed to assist students in various stages of the design thinking process – from initial concept development to the final creation of ceramic pieces. This system provided real-time feedback, allowed virtual manipulation of materials, and offered insights into historical and cultural aspects of ceramics.
The findings revealed several key impacts of AI integration in ceramics education. Firstly, there was a significant increase in students' creative confidence and engagement. The AI system encouraged exploration and experimentation, leading to more ambitious and complex student projects. Secondly, the study noted an enhancement in collaborative dynamics among students, fostered by the shared learning experience with the AI tool. Finally, the research observed an evolution in students' perception of ceramics, viewing it not only as a traditional craft but also as a field ripe for modernization and technological innovation.
In conclusion, the integration of AI in Korean ceramics education presents a successful model for blending traditional art forms with modern technology. This approach not only enriches the learning experience but also ensures the preservation and continuation of cultural heritage in the digital age. The study contributes valuable insights into the potential of AI as a transformative tool in art education, suggesting new directions for future research and curriculum development.
