Abstract
The potential for successive ionic layer deposition (SILD) technology to be used in the surface modification of SnO2 films using Ag nanoclusters was analyzed in this paper. It was found that the surface modification by SILD of Ag nanoclusters can be used to improve both the sensitivity and response rate of SnO2-based gas sensors to CO and H-2. Models showing the promotional role of Ag additives were then discussed. It was also established that the presence of Ag clusters on the surface of SnO2 depresses the sensor response to ozone. This effect can be used to improve the selectivity of sensors of reducing gases aimed for operation in atmosphere containing oxidizing gases. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
