- Development of a Multi-channel NIRS (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) Imaging System for Early Detection and Improvement of Accuracy of Imaging Diagnosis in Prostate Cancer: Preliminary Phantom Study
- Abstract
- Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a multi-channel NIRS (Near-Infrared
Spectroscopy) system and verify its diagnostic capability for the early detection and improvement of
the accuracy of imaging diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Materials and Methods: We developed a new multi-channel NIRS system using two near-infrared
wavelengths - 785 nm and 830 nm. Each wavelength had 8 channels and shared 2 detectors. A computer
software named Labview (National Instrument, USA) was used to develop GUI (Graphic User
Interface) which can process incoming signals and display them on the same monitor simultaneously.
We applied our NIRS system to the optical phantoms of the prostate gland and prostate cancer to verify
its diagnostic capability.
Results: Relatively lower light signal intensities were noted around three surface channels over
prostate cancer model at both detectors and at both wavelengths, suggesting that light is more absorbed
and/or scattered when passing through these routes reflecting the presence of an inner region
with different optical properties from its surroundings.
Conclusion: We successfully demonstrated the possibility of the NIRS system as a new potential
imaging method for improving the diagnostic accuracy of prostate cancer.
