Two dimensional displacement sensor using fiber bragg gratings embedded in a cylindrical metal cantilever

Abstract
We propose two dimensional displacement sensor using two FBG (fiber Bragg gratings) embedded in a cylindrical high elastic metal cantilever. Two sets of FBG were embedded in the two grooves inscribed on the surface of and axially along the cantilever with a separation of a quarter circle, 90° in the cross sectional circle of the cantilever. A simple approach using Bragg wavelength shift to monitor two dimensional motion is presented. Our experimental results showed the maximum measurement error for the displacement was ±7.7% and that for the movement direction was ±2.5°.
